The Royal Devon is a large Trust delivering core services to a population of over 615,000 people through two acute hospitals, 20 community locations, and care provided in people’s own homes.
Drawing on the expertise of leading scientists, academics, research nurses and supporting colleagues, the Trust delivers a diverse range of commercial and non-commercial clinical trials, observational studies, and transformative projects exploring new therapies and medical technologies.
The impact of this research is profound as it empowers the Royal Devon to deliver life-changing and often life-saving diagnostic services, introduce new and improved treatment methods, and innovate ways to monitor conditions from the comfort of a patient’s own home.
Research Snapshot
We support a huge number of clinical trials across a range of conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and many more. Since 2020 alone the Trust has conducted over 666 diverse studies for leading organisations such as Moderna, Sanofi, and Jazz Pharmaceuticals.
Our facilities
Alongside our large, purpose-built commercial research centre, we provide state-of-the-art facilities in partnership with the University of Exeter at the RILD building. Located on the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital Wonford site, this is home to the NIHR Exeter Clinical Research Facility, the Wellcome Wolfson Centre for Medical Research, a Post Graduate Education Centre, and medical research laboratories, complete with offices, meeting rooms and write up areas.
We have further research facilities at our Heavitree Site, and a new Clinical Research facility opening in North Devon in 2025. All of our facilities are supported by our bespoke clinical trials pharmacy, pathology, and imaging services.
