Our Practice offers a comprehensive range of specialist clinics, including those focused on the management of chronic disease management, this includes COPD, Respiratory and Cardiovascular disease, Diabetes. Additionally, we have expert social prescribers who provide dedicated support for patients with mental health disorders, as well as those suffering from persistent pain. Honiton Surgery has been involved in Research activity for the past 30years and has a strong reputation for high quality research output.

Honiton Surgery serves a patient population of approximately 18,000 individuals.

Research snapshot

Honiton Surgery is a Leading Primary Care Research Practice supporting many commercial and non-commercial clinical trials across a range of conditions e.g. Respiratory, Diabetes, Wound care, Heart disease. We are also involved in trialling and testing innovative health technologies. As an NIHR Tier 3 research practice, we are committed to delivering high quality research to improve patient outcomes.

In the last 15mths we have conducted over 20 diverse studies.

We deliver research studies under the umbrella of the Regional Research Delivery Network (Southwest Peninsula) which is part of the NHS National Institute for Health and Care Research. We have an experienced Principal Investigator, Research Nurse and Study Co-ordinator/Administrator. The team are all trained in Good Clinical Practice and have robust processes in place to ensure effective research management and governance and commercial research trial delivery and assurance.

Our research activity is led by Dr Daniel Murphy, an experienced Principal Investigator with extensive expertise in primary care research.

We have played a pivotal role as a regional hub site for the Panoramic Covid Treatment Study, supporting research delivery across East Devon and Exeter. Our practice has been actively involved in multiple commercial research studies, including the Heropa Study (IRAS ID 1006508) with positive feedback from Sponsor. Duration UTI study, one of the top recruiters. Relief Mild Asthma study of which we have just completed, Ecraid Base and IID3 studies. All of which we maintained a high percentage of retention in our patients and met our target numbers consistently.

Our facilities

Our GP practice is benefits from robust infrastructure to support high-quality study delivery. We have dedicated clinical space to conduct research activities with access to essential research related equipment including:

  • 2x Temperature controlled and monitored clinical refrigerators
  • Centrifuge and standard clinical equipment including ECG machine
  • Secure storage with limited access (key coded locked room)
  • Space for monitoring visits and supervised remote monitoring
  • Our Electronic Medical Record (EMR) platform is SystmOne
  • We can easily run searches within our clinical database to identify eligible patients
  • Experienced with innovative research methods such as eConsent, eDiaries and remote visits, we are flexible equipped to carry out Home visits to enable elderly/Disabled patients dependent on need.
  • A digital and technology enabled practice
  • Pharmacy locations very nearby within walking distance.
  • We have acquired funding for a Freezer <20◦c
  • We are happy to negotiate and acquire any equipment necessary to accommodate Studies.
